What does the Lovers Card Mean in the Tarot?

The Lovers Tarot Card Meaning: Love, Choices and Relationships

The Lovers is the sixth card in the Major Arcana of the tarot deck. When you first look at this card, you may recognise similarities to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Traditionally, The Lovers represents love, harmony, relationships, meaningful choices and personal values. Although this card is often associated with romantic relationships, its meaning can extend beyond love. It can also encourage us to reflect on our beliefs, consider what truly matters to us and make choices that align with our authentic selves.

The Symbolism in The Lovers

When exploring the symbolism of The Lovers, I am using the Rider–Waite–Smith tarot deck as my reference.

The Sun

Starting at the top of the card, you will notice a bright, radiant sun positioned behind the angel. The sun can symbolise warmth, joy, clarity and awareness.

Its position above the two figures may suggest that their connection exists under a higher spiritual presence. The radiant light can also represent the clarity that comes from understanding ourselves and the choices we make.

The sun's brightness creates a sense of openness and warmth, complementing the themes of honesty, connection and harmony found throughout the card.

The Angel

Above the man and woman is an angel appearing in front of the sun, with clouds beneath him. The angel is traditionally identified as Archangel Raphael, who is associated with healing.

The angel may represent divine guidance, protection and a higher spiritual perspective. His position above the two figures suggests a connection between human relationships and something greater than ourselves.

Notice how the angel's arms are outstretched above the figures and the trees behind them. This posture can be interpreted as a gesture of blessing or protection, as though the figures are under his watchful presence.

The angel's clothing also contrasts with the nakedness of the man and woman below. While the figures are exposed and vulnerable, the angel appears clothed and elevated above them. This contrast invites us to consider the relationship between our physical desires, our emotions and our spiritual understanding.

The Two Figures

The man and woman are both depicted naked, which can symbolise vulnerability, innocence and authenticity. With no clothing to conceal themselves, they appear exposed and unguarded.

This can suggest that meaningful relationships require honesty and openness. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we give others the opportunity to understand who we truly are.

The figures are also commonly associated with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Their presence, together with the trees and the serpent, reinforces themes of innocence, temptation, knowledge and the consequences of our choices.

The Woman

The woman appears to be looking upwards towards the angel. Her open posture may suggest receptiveness to guidance, spiritual awareness or a desire to understand something beyond herself.

Behind her is a tree bearing green leaves and fruit, with a serpent wrapped around its trunk. This tree is commonly associated with the Tree of Knowledge from the biblical story of Adam and Eve.

The serpent is an important symbol because it can evoke temptation, desire, knowledge and the consequences of making choices. In the Garden of Eden story, the serpent encourages Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, introducing the idea that choices can bring both knowledge and consequences.

Within a tarot interpretation, this imagery may encourage us to consider the influences that shape our decisions. Are we acting in accordance with our values, or are we being guided by temptation, fear or the expectations of others?

The serpent can also be interpreted in connection with sexuality and desire, which are relevant to The Lovers' themes of attraction and human connection.

Rather than representing something purely negative, the imagery invites us to reflect on how desire, knowledge and personal responsibility can influence the paths we choose.

The Man

The man stands opposite the woman and appears to be looking directly towards her. His gaze draws attention to the connection between the two figures and the relationship developing between them.

Behind him is another tree, this one bearing twelve flames. This tree is commonly associated with the Tree of Life.

The flames may symbolise passion, desire, vitality and the energy that can accompany love and attraction. Their presence contrasts with the green leaves and fruit of the woman's tree, giving the two sides of the card different visual qualities.

Together, the trees may suggest that relationships involve different but complementary elements, including knowledge, desire, emotion and spiritual growth.

The man's gaze towards the woman also draws attention to the importance of connection. The Lovers is not simply about being attracted to someone; it can also encourage us to consider how we relate to others and the choices we make within those relationships.

The Mountain

Between the two figures, in the background, stands a mountain that rises towards the sky.

Mountains can symbolise challenges, ambition, achievement and the journey towards a goal. In the context of The Lovers, the mountain may represent the challenges that arise as two people build a relationship or work towards a shared future.

One possible interpretation is that meaningful relationships require effort, understanding and a willingness to work through difficulties together. Just as climbing a mountain requires persistence, maintaining a healthy relationship can require patience and commitment.

The mountain can also represent personal aspirations. When making an important decision, we may need to consider not only what feels right in the present but also where our choices may lead us in the future.

The Lovers for Personal Growth
