The Magician is traditionally associated with manifestation, resourcefulness, confidence, personal power and ability.

To sum it up simply, The Magician suggests that you may already possess many of the skills, knowledge and resources needed to pursue your goals.

The Magician follows The Fool in the Major Arcana.

The Fool has begun their journey with very little. The Magician shows us what can happen when we begin to recognise what we already have within our reach.

What Does The Magician Mean?

The Magician is often associated with the ability to turn an idea into something tangible.

While The Fool represents the beginning of a journey, The Magician can represent the moment when we realise that we have the ability to do something with the opportunities in front of us.

This doesn't necessarily mean that everything will happen effortlessly.

Instead, The Magician encourages use to recognise our abilities and make use of them.

You might already have more knowledge, experience, creativity or resources than you realise.

Looking at the Rider-Waite-Smith Magician

Where The Fool appears to be setting off with very little, The Magician stands at a table surrounded by tools.

It almost feels like a continuation of the Fool's journey.

The Fool has begun.

Now The Magician is ready to do something with what they have.

The Infinity Symbol

Above The Magician's head is an infinity symbol.

The symbol can be associated with infinity, continuity and limitless possibility.

To me, it also suggests the idea that knowledge and potential are not necessarily finite.

There is always something more to learn, another skill to develop or another way to use what we already know. 

Interestingly, The Magician isn't the only Major Arcana card associated with the infinity symbol.

Strength also features an infinity symbol above the figure's head.

The two cards can therefore create an interesting connection between inner strength, personal ability and the potential to accomplish something.

The Ouroboros

Around The Magician's waist is a snake biting its own tail, known as an ouroboros.

Because the snake forms a continuous circle, the ouroboros is often associated with ideas such as cycles, eternity, renewal and the continuous nature of life.

To me, its placement around The Magician's waist reinforces the idea of something that is constantly moving and renewing itself.

It also connects beautifully with the infinity symbol above his head.

Both symbols create the impression of something that has no clear beginning or end.

The Four Tools

Perhaps the most recognisable part of The Magician's table is the collection of objects sitting in front of him.

We can see:

A cup
A sword
A wand
A coin.

These correspond to the four suits of the Minor Arcana:

Cups = Water
Swords = Air
Wands = Fire
Pentacles = Earth

Together, they can be seen as representing the four elements and the different areas of experience represented throughout the Minor Arcana.

To me, this is one of the clearest expressions of The Magician's resourcefulness.

He has the tools he needs in front of him,

The Magician doesn't necessarily need to find something else.

The resources are already there, but does he know how to use them?

The Raised Wand

The Magician holds a white wand above his head while pointing his other hand towards the ground. 

This creates a connection between what is above and what is below.

To me, the raised wand represents putting potential into action.

It is one thing to have an idea.

It is another thing to actually do something with it.

The Magician isn't simply standing beside the tools on his table.

He is actively using them.

This is why I see The Magician as a card of action as well as potential.

You can have all the skills and resources in the world, but they only become useful when you decide to use them.

The raised wand can therefore feel like a declaration:

I have the ability. Now I will use it.

The Roses and Lilies

The Magician is surrounded by greenery, roses and lilies.

The roses can be associated with passion, beauty and desire, while the lilies can represent purity and spiritual qualities.

To me, the abundance of plant life creates another interesting contrast with The Fool.

The Fool is setting out into the world.

The Magician is surrounded by things that are already growing.

This makes me think about what can happen when an idea is given attention and care.

A seed needs the right conditions to grow.

In much the same way, our ideas and ambitions may need time, effort and attention before they can become something tangible.

The flowers and greenery therefore remind me of potential becoming growth.

Your efforts may begin as something small, but with the right care, they can begin to flourish.

To me, The Magician is about recognising your potential and deciding to do something with it.

The Fool began the journey with very little.

Now, only one card later, we see someone surrounded by tools.

The Magician has the cup.

The sword.

The wand.

The pentacle.

They represent different kinds of energy, knowledge and experience that can be brought together.

But having the tools isn't enough.

The Magician has to use them.

That is what makes this card so powerful to me.

Sometimes we spend so much time looking for the thing we believe we're missing that we overlook everything we already possess.

Perhaps you don't need to become an entirely different person before you can begin.

Perhaps you simply need to recognise what is already in your hands.

The Magician reminds us that potential becomes powerful when we choose to act on it.
