The Fool

Number 0 - Major Arcana

The Fool is traditionally associated with new beginnings, adventure, innocence, spontaneity, freedom and possibility. 

The Fool is often seen as the beginning of the journey through the Major Arcana. Numbered 0, The Fool stands at the threshold of something new. They don't necessarily know where the journey will lead, but they are willing to take the first step.

What Does The Fool Mean?

Some interpretations associate The Fool with naivety and innocence, while others see optimism, curiosity and a willingness to embrace the unknown.

The Fool can represent the excitement that comes with beginning something new. It might be starting a new relationship, moving somewhere unfamiliar, beginning a new career or simply deciding to approach life differently.

There can also be an element of spontaneity to The Fool. They don't appear to have every detail of their journey planned. 

And perhaps that's part of the message.

We don't always have to know exactly where we're going before we begin.

Looking at the Rider-Waite-Smith Fool

One of my favourite things about tarot is that the imagery can tell us just as much as the traditional meanings. 

If you look at the Rider-Waite-Smith Fool, you'll see a young man standing near the edge of a cliff, with his arms outstretched and his head tilted towards the sky.

The Sun and the Sky

The Fool's face is turned towards the bright sky above him.

I interpret this as someone who is feeling the warmth of the sun on their face and simply living in the moment.

There is something wonderfully carefree about the way he stands. 

He isn't looking down at a cliff. 

He isn't staring anxiously at the road ahead.

He's looking upwards.

To me, this creates a feeling of optimism, freedom and excitement about what might come next.

The Small Bag

The Fool carries a long stick over his shoulder, with a small bag attached to the end. 

To me, this suggests that the Fool has packed only the bare necessities.

It gives off the energy of someone who has decided, perhaps somewhat spontaneously, to set off on a journey.

He hasn't packed everything he might possibly need.

He hasn't planned every destination.

He simply has enough to get started.

The White Rose

In his other hand, The Fool holds a small white flower, often identified as a white rose.

The colour white is traditionally associated with purity and innocence, which fits naturally with The Fool.

The flower also adds a sense of gentleness to the card.

To me, this brings a sense of nurturing energy, that he is approaching this new journey with openness.

The White Dog

At The Fool's feet is a small white dog standing on its hind legs.

One interpretation is that the dog is barking at The Fool, warning him about the danger of standing so close to the edge of the cliff.

I see the dog a little differently.

To me, the dog represents a trusted and loyal companion.

The Fool may not know exactly where he is going, but he isn't necessarily travelling alone.

The dog could also represent the people, instincts or little reminders around us that encourage us to pay attention while we move forward.

There doesn't have to be only one interpretation.

That's one of the things I love about tarot imagery. Two people can look at exactly the same card and notice something completely different.

The Cliff

The Fool is standing very close to the edge of a cliff.

This is one of the most recognisable parts of the card.

It can be interpreted as a warning that The Fool is unaware of the danger directly in front of him.

But it can also represent taking a leap into the unknown.

To me, the cliff captures the uncertainty that comes with any new beginning.

The Fool doesn't know what is beyond the edge.

Neither do we.

When we begin something new, there is always a degree of uncertainty. We can plan, prepare and think carefully, but we can never know exactly what will happen.

The Fool seems willing to accept that uncertainty.

The Mountains

In the background, you can see a mountain range with peaks and valleys stretching into the distance.

I like to think of these mountains as representing the journey ahead.

There will be high points and low points.

There will be moments that feel exciting and rewarding, and moments that may be difficult.

From where The Fool is standing, he cannot see the entire journey.

He can only see that there is a road ahead.

Perhaps that is another reason the mountains are so important.

We rarely know exactly what our entire journey will look like.

We discover it one step at a time.

Before looking at the traditional meanings of The Fool, take a moment to look at the card yourself.

What do you notice?

• Where does your eye go first?
• What do you think The Fool is feeling?
• Why do you think he is looking towards the sky?
• What do you think the dog is doing?
• Does The Fool look prepared for his journey?
• What could the mountains represent to you?
• How does the bright sky make you feel?
• What does the white rose mean to you?
• Does the cliff feel exciting, dangerous or both?

There isn't necessarily one correct answer.

Part of learning tarot is learning to observe the cards and develop your own relationship with their imagery.

🔮 The Fool in a Tarot Reading

The meaning of a tarot card can change depending on the question being asked and the cards surrounding it.

For example:

A New Opportunity

If you're asking about a new opportunity, The Fool might suggest approaching it with curiosity and openness.

You may not know exactly where the opportunity will lead, but that doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't explore it.

A Difficult Decision

If you're facing a difficult decision, The Fool could invite you to consider whether fear of the unknown is preventing you from moving forward.

It may be asking you to consider what could happen if you allowed yourself to take a chance.

Personal Growth

In a reading about personal growth, The Fool might represent stepping outside your usual routine and allowing yourself to experience something new.

It could be an invitation to approach yourself and the world with a little more curiosity.

A New Chapter

The Fool can also appear when one chapter of life is ending and another is beginning.

You may not have all the answers yet.

That's okay.

The Fool doesn't either.

☀️ The Heart of The Fool

To me, The Fool is about beginning a new journey with a sense of innocence, curiosity and optimism.

The Fool doesn't necessarily know where he will end up.

He may not have everything planned.

He may not even realise all the challenges waiting for him.

But he is willing to take that first step.

And perhaps that is what makes The Fool so beautiful.

We can spend a lot of time waiting until we feel completely ready.

Waiting until we have a perfect plan.

Waiting until we know exactly what will happen.

But sometimes, there is no way to know.

Sometimes we simply have to begin.

The Fool reminds us that there is possibility in the unknown.

He reminds us that we don't have to see the entire path before taking the first step.

And perhaps, like The Fool, we may discover that the journey itself is where we begin to blossom.
